>> no question about it. mitt romney is the clear winner of last night's debate, even i'm co conceding the obama loss. we all agree on this. the real question on moving forward is weather romney's win will change the race. we've seen mondale outperform president raleigh in 1984 and with john kerry defeated bush. neither kerry or mondale translated that into an election night win, although steve kornacki likes to think about a potential mondale president history. as the dust settles, they're back on the trail today. obama is en route to a rally in wisconsin, but earlier today in denver supporters saw the obama we hoped to see last night. >> when i got onto the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. he said that he doesn't even know that there's such laws that encourage outsourcing, never heard of them. he said if it's true, he must need a new accountant. we know for sure it was not the real mitt romney, because he seems to be doing just fine with his current accountant. thank goodness somebody is finally getting tough on big bird. it's about time

between president obama and mitt romney. the republican nominee is widely seen as the winner of last night's debate while even the president's strongest supporters now concede he was not at the top of his game. and now the president is back out there on the campaign trail. he's getting ready to speak at a rally over at the university of wisconsin in madison. we're goingo be hearing from him live this hour. but first, listen to what he said about mitt romney at a rally earlier today before he left denver. >> when i got on to the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. this morning and as the pundits were saying last night, i think that romney had from a theatrical perspective a great night. >> we have to wait to see what history says about who won or lost. the polls are crystal clear. 60% think romney won. on the issues, romney way ahead of the president also. who would better handle the deficit. 16-point advantage. economy, a 12-point advantage. taxes, 9-point advantage. across the board. >> i think those polls are snap polls of people who watch the debate. so i think that this -- i really do think that it will take a while to set in. you know, we have to know who watched the debate and who didn't watch. you know, we have other debates to come. but, you know, listen, i'm not suggesting that the president had a good night last night. i think he seemed very disengaged. he seemed very slow to react. and romney was, you know, had a -- from a theatrical perspective, had a terrific evening. >> you tweeted out, which was your only tweet, no offense whatsoever. >> yeah. >> so you agree. >> i found the thing that was most surprising was that the president really s

on wednesday night. the question for paul ryan is can he protect in a way mitt romney's achievement and can he consolidate it and after the romney debate after the ryan debate in a sense can it confirm what romney did. i think it is a very important moment. vice president biden will try very hard to retrospecktively discredit mitt romney's victory. he will say maybe obama was off his game a little. he won't say that but implication. all lies, deception, flip flopping, big mirage that you saw for 90 minutes. biden is going to come incredibly hard at romney. ryan has to defend romney and in effect consolidate romney's gains. like coming in in the second leg of a relay race. your team is ahead and you got to hold the lead and got to, of course, attack the obama biden record but above all sort of consolidate what romney did in the first debate and not let biden undercut it. >> geraldo: so you think that joe biden has to do something the president did not. he has to take it to his opponent? >> he is totally going to do that. not to ryan but to romney. if i were biden i would take all 45 minutes of

that this was mitt romney's night. he was punchier, crisper, president obama seemed tired. he was convoluted. the feedback i was getting from people viewing from their homes, frankly they were lost during the course of this debate. it strikes me as a really fine line between having a very serious economic policy debate which this certainly was, in which american voters say they wanted and the country certainly needs and making sure that you keep the voters engaged and that you make it comprehensible to voters. and i think again on that front, mitt romney did a better job than barack obama did and he has to go into that second debate stronger. because the consensus is here that he had a weak night. >> rose: al hunt, was this a good debate as debates go? >> i'm not sure how you judge that, charlie. i think it's up to the candidates to make it a good or bad debate and i think romney did a pretty good job and obama did a very poor job. show i guess that makes it a wash. i'm not sure about mike murphy's point about it being a reset though i suspect he's right. but i would pick up on josh tyrangi

governor romney had a strong night but in this section, on entitlements, he didn't necessarily look the best, and, it seemed to be the moment where he wasn't as sure of himself in the arguments as he was throughout the rest of the debate. he was very strong on tax policy, he was strong on on his economic policy, and, he used the $90 billion figure to great advantage, twice, he used it, against the president, on energy policy, and he used it against him on education policy. but, during the section on entitlements, he didn't necessarily seem to be at his strongest. but... certainly much stronger than the president. >> chris: i want to ask you about a moment you didn't bring up, that has gotten a lot of attention, let's take a look at this one. >> i'm sorry, jim, i'm going to stop the subsidy to pbs and stop other things. i like pbs and i love big bird and i like you, too but i will not keep spending money on things to borrow money from china to pay for it. >> chris: now was that smart, as a way to show that he is serious about cutting spending or always a mistake to take on big bird?
